Het Geheugen van Nederland brengt de geschiedenis tot leven. Al vijf jaar lang zijn op www.geheugenvannederland.nl honderdduizenden gedigitaliseerde foto’s, prenten, schilderijen, affiches, boeken en filmfragmenten te vinden, allemaal van eigen bodem. Ze komen uit de verzamelingen van musea, bibliotheken en archieven door het hele land. De coördinatie van de Geheugen website is in handen van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek. Fabrique Communicatie en Design werd ingeschakeld om het overall concept, de vormgeving en de client sided techniek van de site compleet te vernieuwen. Het bijzondere aan dit project is dat Fabrique niet alleen heeft nagedacht over de vormgeving, maar de propositie van Geheugen van Nederland als online beeldbank heeft neergezet. En met resultaat: op de nieuwe website spatten de beelden van de pagina’s af en is door de bijzondere navigatie de volgende afbeelding altijd maar één muisklik verwijderd. Door de rijke objectpagina’s met veel links is de website niet alleen zeer gebruiksvriendelijk, maar is de pagina’s ook hoog in de zoekmachines (o.a. Google) terecht gekomen, wat heeft geleid tot een verdrievoudiging van het bezoekersaantal.

Uit het juryrapport: ‘Het Geheugen van Nederland opent een soort virtuele snoepwinkel waarin men uren verbaasd kan ronddwalen door de meest uiteenlopende collecties, zonder dat er sprake is van verdwalen in de veelheid aan stukken. Het is de verdienste van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek en Fabrique samen dat de verrassende archieven open zijn gegaan en op een heldere en aantrekkelijke wijze aan ons allemaal kunnen worden getoond.’

Archis is a independent platform for architecture, city and visual culture, that up to then was most known through its magazine. When I worked at Mattmo, Mattmo was asked to create the online representation of Archis. We decided that the medium should lead the form — meaning having issues as in printer matter would not make sense. Information from earlier issues can have great relevance now, depending on context. There was also a large role for the website’s visitors. Their participation played a key role in content creation. The visitors information could be easily adjusted to his interests, partly by choice, partly suggested by the underlying system, making it possible to discover new paths on the website. This video was used to present the underlying ideas and context at the launch party of the webssite, which received a Bronze Medal Interactive Media Design 2004 by the prestigious American ID Magazine.

Archis.org was created in a team while I worked as a senior designer at Mattmo.

What does the project have to do with the Dutch island Texel? Nothing. The project is named after an original, 29-year-old bag that belonged to a Catholic soccer team named Texelse Boys. The bag was bought at a trunk sale for 5 Euros on Texel (near Caluna, a leisure pool on the island). The Texelse Boys soccer team was founded in 1932, but merged with another soccer team and formed SV Texel in 1994. The team Texelse Boys does not exist anymore.

At first the project was named Virtual Boy, but after the purchase of the bag, we decided that Texelse Boys (www.texelseboys.org) would be a better name. The team stopped existing anyway, so why not use their name for our collective? The great thing is that the name already has a history and instantly, we had something to work with. We could use the bag as an icon/logo. The very first publication was in the Texelse Courant, which is usually only about the news about the island itself. But the fact that an old name was given new meaning for another collective was reason enough for the editor to publish something about us as a ‘foreign news’ story.

We were a bit afraid at first, as we’d stolen the name of a team that had played a key role in the lives on the small community on Texel for such a long time. But, then we got a big OK from the former board of the team and the mare of the municipality of Texel. As a project, Texelse Boys started when several Dutch musicians were invited to make remixes with beats and samples. Along with the music, videos would also be made. But now the project has expanded to a platform for all kinds of creative people worldwide.

Email and online servers are used to exchange beats, tracks, knowledge, inspiration and artwork. For example: with the uploaded music, other musicians make remixes. This music is then used as an inspiration for other creative people to do their our thing, whether it includes the use of music or not. It can be a photo, a video, a website, a game, a CD-sleeve, something interactive, or whatever they feel like making. It’s funny that the bag itself has actually become the main inspiration for the artwork.
