This is not a new book, but a book with a story. I think it was in the second year of Interactive/Media/Design as a study, stopped at my mailbox at the academy to empty it on my way back home. This book was in it, obviously filling up my mailbox completely. With the book was a note, by somebody named Marc Boumeester, saying: ‘If you think this is interesting, maybe it is interesting to meet.’ And: ‘If not, you can keep the book anyway.’ It was not only interesting, but also relevant. So we met, fitted a new course into the curriculum and now Marc is coordinator with me at I/M/D.

by Hartmut Esslinger of frog design
Got this book today from Till and Tjeerd at frog design Amsterdam, a fine line — how design strategies are shaping the future of business. Written by the founder of frog, Hartmut Esslinger. I had already bought it a while ago, now some time to actually read it. Thanks guys!

by Hugh MacLeod
Just read this great book by Hugh MacLeod of gapingvoid.com. A book full with quote-worthy material. Picks you up when you’re down.

Found this post on BusinessWeek. Some great reads here, although the more businessy books become, the uglier the cover. But never judge a book by its cover, right?

Yesterday I received a copy of this great book Het Festivalgevoel, designed by Maslow. A massive book about the festivals in the Netherlands and Belgium. Browsing through the book feels like actually being at those festivals. Great job and thanks!

Captured and released by Joi Ito
Got this fantastic book by Guido van Nispen. Freesouls is an entry into a lively mind, the chance to travel and talk with people who banter about the future from far corners of the earth. The author, Joi Ito shares his access to these provocative change-agents with a spirit of open information and dialog. The folks portrayed have worked to make good from their passions.
The book is available as a boxed set, a limited and numbered edition and a general release. Thanks Guido!

by Clare McNally
Got this neat book by Rudolf at BIS Publishers, to check out if it could be of value for my students. Well, it is! This book shows those embarking on a career in creative advertising how best to put together an effective, professional portfolio. Clare McNally is an acclaimed teacher in advertising (Miami Ad School) and has worked in top agencies and won numerous international advertising awards. She has written her book in a clear voice, with a personal approach. Reading it is very much like enjoying a personal master class by Clare.

by the Design & Emotion Society
Today I got this great book in the mail, thanks Jeroen! The book is based on a collaborative workshop organized by the Design & Emotion Society, TU Delft and PolyU on Design & Emotion. One of my students took part in this workshop. Enriching shows the making of five emotion-driven design concepts during the workshops: photos, sketches and handwritten text in the original ‘Dunglish’ and ‘Chinglish’ of the participants make this book a fun read.

by Vitra
I was visiting the friendly blokes at MyModern for some new chairs and bumped into this just perfect book, again designed by Cornel Windlin, who also is responsible for Vitra’s smart and elegant brochures.
Projekt Vitra is the self-representation of a successful company. And yet the book, with its intelligent essays, with its products arranged like families for a wedding photo, with historical and contemporary pictures and documents, is more than a corporate history. At times it gives a short history of design, at others an example of which architecture is able to achieve, at still others everything revolves around the transformation of the world of work, or the special features of industrial design processes. Or we witness how regional roots and skilled entrepreneurial actions can generate an independent industrial culture and how very personal relationships can lead to global networks.
I instantly ordered it when I was home. Wow.

by Waacs, Spinhex&Industry, Ivo Victoria and Enkeling

by Concrete
Just got mail! I worked on this book at …,staat and it was far from completed when I left. Great to see how it turned into a massive 480 pages book with a wide variety of creative contributions. In addition to a detailed overview of the firm’s most important projects, The World According to Concrete provides insight into the vision, the working method, the commitment and the sources of inspiration upon which the various projects are based. The thinking behind Concrete’s work is discussed and put in perspective by authors from diverse disciplines.

by 178 aardige ontwerpers
Got this book from Jos, one of the 178 aardige ontwerpers (affable designers) studio for visual communication, Amsterdam. They belong to the first generation of designers who have given the term ‘multimedia’ new meaning. Their work is not only multimedia in the sense of using various kinds of media, but also ‘multimedia’ in the sense of utilizing different materials, reproduction methods and styles.
The who, what, why and how of 178 aardige ontwerpers will be illustrated to the reader in this book, on the basis of 10 ‘hot’ questions and 24 ‘affable’ cases — loads of visual eye candy!

by BIS/BNO
The Dutch Design books are published every two years by BIS Publishers and BNO, showing an uncensored cross-section of the current state of affairs in Dutch design, representing over 300 agencies. …,staat created the concept and design for the 2006/2007 edition. This edition’s nearly 1000-page set is all about the question: “What exactly is real Dutch Design?” Various key players in different design areas were asked this very question – from Stefan Sagmeister and Wim Crouwel to Anton Corbijn and Marc Newson. You will find their answers and thoughts in Real Dutch Design 0607, together with the work of more than 300 Dutch design agencies. The set consists of two books and is all about contrast in material and contrast in design – fluorescent plastic combined with basic cardboard binds the pages together. Between these contradictory extremes, everything is possible. Real Dutch Design can be read from either side, and is published in a Dutch-German-English edition.

by Vitra
When shopping for nice stuff for home, I came across this gorgeous Vitra catalogue. It simply rocks. It’s smart, authentic, fresh… Designed by Cornel Windlin who has been responsible for conceiving and designing Vitra’s home catalogues since 2004. If you still can get your hands on one, you really should.

by Joachim Baan
For as long as I can’t remember is a perfect bound, full color book, featuring the photographic work by my good friend Joachim Baan. It’s simply beautiful and gives you the opportunity to look through the eyes of Joachim. Made from pure love and passion.
