This is so cool:

Look at your computer setup and imagine that you hooked up a 3D printer. Instead of printing on bits of paper this 3D printer makes real, robust, mechanical parts. To give you an idea of how robust, think Lego bricks and you’re in the right area. You could make lots of useful stuff, but interestingly you could also make most of the parts to make another 3D printer. That would be a machine that could copy itself.

RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper. It is the practical self-copying 3D printer shown on the right – a self-replicating machine. This 3D printer builds the parts up in layers of plastic. This technology already exists, but the cheapest commercial machine would cost you about €30,000. And it isn’t even designed so that it can make itself. So what the RepRap team are doing is to develop and to give away the designs for a much cheaper machine with the novel capability of being able to self-copy (material costs are about €500). That way it’s accessible to small communities in the developing world as well as individuals in the developed world. Following the principles of the Free Software Movement we are distributing the RepRap machine at no cost to everyone under the GNU General Public Licence. So, if you have a RepRap machine, you can use it to make another and give that one to a friend…
The RepRap project became widely known after a large press coverage in March 2005, though the idea goes back to a paper on the web written by Adrian Bowyer on 2 February 2004.

The campsite transformed into a test-, experiment, development center and became a festival as wel. Designs Waacs is was working on for some clients were tested, new innovations were made. But also to solve camping related issues or design stuff that will make camp trips even better. From usable ideas, solutions, but also concepts or straight entertainment. Mixed with good food, the best possible weather and they even went sailing. It was, by far, the best camping experience ever.

Crowdsourcend naar een betere camping

‘Heeft iemand misschien een beitel voor mij?’ roept iemand over de groene kampeer weide van Camping Heeg in Friesland. Even later vliegt het stuk gereedschap door de lucht en wordt er flink gehakt op een stuk hout. Niet een alledaags gezicht om klussende kampeerders te zien. Maar dit weekeinde wordt de camping dan ook niet bevolkt door gewone recreanten, maar heeft het Rotterdamse ontwerpbureau Waacs de eigen kantoordeuren dichtgedaan en de hele tent overgenomen. De inzet: een betere kampeerervaring voor iedereen.

‘Aanleiding voor het evenement was de mogelijkheid om een mooi boek uit te brengen,’ vertelt Marcel Kampman, een van de organisatoren. ‘Tel daarbij op het jaarlijkse bedrijfsuitje en het feit dat het bureau vijftien jaar bestaat en je hebt de hoofdingrediënten voor een verrassend weekeinde in de natuur.’ Sponsors en klanten van het bureau hielpen ook nog een handje en voor de rest waren het de creatieve vrienden van Waacs die het weekeinde tot een succes moesten maken. Op een blog kon iedereen al weken voor vertrek zijn ei kwijt. Vragen werden gesteld, plannen gesmeed en ideeën geopperd. Waacs probeert door middel van crowdsourcing het kamperen een nieuwe impuls te geven.

Voor Kampman is het niet de eerste keer dat hij het publiek betrekt bij een idee. Hij starte ooit de community Texelse Boys rond een oude voetbaltas. Het ledenaantal groeide snel en iedereen leverde input. Er kwamen animaties, stickers, poster, liedjes en verhalen van de oubollige voetbaltas. Vandaag in Heeg is het allemaal nog duidelijker wat je met de creativiteit van een flinke club kunt doen. Een meisje met een idee voor een nieuw soort kruk waar een barbecue in zit, zoekt een tekenaar op die in een half uurtje het idee concreet maakt. Verderop staan drie jongens van een paar fietswielen een nieuw soort barbecue voor vis te lassen en aan de andere kant van het terrein maken twee vrouwen een jurk die ook als tent is te gebruiken. In de Waacs-caravan haalt een jongen mp3-spelers uitelkaar om ze draadloos met elkaar te verbinden. ‘Zo kan de hele camping naar elkaars muziek luisteren.’

Camera’s klikken er flink op los want alles moet natuurlijk goed gedocumenteerd worden voor het grote kampeer boek dat over twee maanden af moet zijn. Een jongen heeft een enquête op een typemachine in elkaar gedraaid en neemt deze bij iedereen af. ‘De resultaten verschijnen in het boek.’

Het nieuwe kamperen moet ook een nieuwe smaak krijgen. Tijdens een workshop sapontwikkeling ontwerpen de deelnemers eerst het flesje dat bij deze smaak past. Daarna komen de appels, komkommers en sapconcentraten voor de dag en gaat de blender aan. Er moet natuurlijk wel geproefd kunnen worden. Iemand loopt met een bakje vol bloemen rond. ‘Daar gaan we straks mee koken,’ vertelt ze. In een tent die veel wegheeft van een grote opgeblazen matras maken drie mensen sap van tarwegras. ‘Goed voor de lever.’

Waacs heeft geluk dat het weer mee zit. Zo kan zelf het tentsurfen op het water worden getest en wordt er zelfs gevaren met de meegebrachte badkuip. En wie even geen idee heeft en helemaal droog staat kan meedoen aan de workshop innovatief denken. De flapovers verdwijnen uiteindelijk in de bus van Waacs: alles is voor het boek.

En zo gaat het drie dagen lang door. Tijdens de grote avond barbecue wordt alles genuttigd en gaan de duimen omhoog. Vruchtensappen die overdag niet echt lekker bleken komen met een flinke scheut wodka toch door de test heen. Daarna gaan de zwembroeken aan en duikt iedereen in de hot-tubs. Want het nieuwe kamperen hoeft natuurlijk geen kreperen te zijn.

Worlds first SMS Novel has been written with sms messages, curated by famous Dutch writers Kluun, Jacob van Duijn, Renske de Greef en Jan Hoek. A SMS Novel is based on a ‘pass through letter’, where each next participant adds a line of text, so a story written by a group of people is the result.

Concept by Marcel Kampman and Frederik Nysingh. The project has been sponsored by Orange, the flash front-end and database linking has been designed and programmed by Fabrique. The back-end has been programmed by Marco van Hylckama Vlieg.

What does the project have to do with the Dutch island Texel? Nothing. The project is named after an original, 29-year-old bag that belonged to a Catholic soccer team named Texelse Boys. The bag was bought at a trunk sale for 5 Euros on Texel (near Caluna, a leisure pool on the island). The Texelse Boys soccer team was founded in 1932, but merged with another soccer team and formed SV Texel in 1994. The team Texelse Boys does not exist anymore.

At first the project was named Virtual Boy, but after the purchase of the bag, we decided that Texelse Boys (www.texelseboys.org) would be a better name. The team stopped existing anyway, so why not use their name for our collective? The great thing is that the name already has a history and instantly, we had something to work with. We could use the bag as an icon/logo. The very first publication was in the Texelse Courant, which is usually only about the news about the island itself. But the fact that an old name was given new meaning for another collective was reason enough for the editor to publish something about us as a ‘foreign news’ story.

We were a bit afraid at first, as we’d stolen the name of a team that had played a key role in the lives on the small community on Texel for such a long time. But, then we got a big OK from the former board of the team and the mare of the municipality of Texel. As a project, Texelse Boys started when several Dutch musicians were invited to make remixes with beats and samples. Along with the music, videos would also be made. But now the project has expanded to a platform for all kinds of creative people worldwide.

Email and online servers are used to exchange beats, tracks, knowledge, inspiration and artwork. For example: with the uploaded music, other musicians make remixes. This music is then used as an inspiration for other creative people to do their our thing, whether it includes the use of music or not. It can be a photo, a video, a website, a game, a CD-sleeve, something interactive, or whatever they feel like making. It’s funny that the bag itself has actually become the main inspiration for the artwork.
