Yes, Stad&Esch will be moving to a brand new location in two years. But that’s no reason not to be proud of the movement that is taking place to become one as a group of people, the four locations before moving there in two years. So we decided to make the most advanced, yet acceptable and do that as lean and mean as possible with a maximum impact. And, to create it all locally and as sustainable as possible. Together with the local studio Dolsma we rebranded all locations of Stad & Esch and added some magic by adding animating LED lights to continuously change the color of the &’s. At night, it really is pure magic. All signing has been build to be repurposed later when moving to the new location.

For the open day, we created these cool fashionable put cotton bags. To carry as a tote or over your shoulder. It will also carry a 15″ laptop. In our aim to create something that lasts, we designed it to be distinct, not as another logo carrier. We thought it would be cool to connect people by inserting the ‘&’ into everyday life, creating spontaneous connections between people. In 10 vibrant colors, always two different colors per bag, creating a wide variety of combinations representing the great diversity of people that together form one school.

Happykampers

Through my work and projects I get to meet and work with lots of amazing people; people who change things simply by touching them. These people can shift paradigms, change thinking, create both movement and movements, inspire others, make things happen and realize seemingly impossible projects. But what they all share is the urge to do stuff. To travel, not only physically, but also in their heads; connect different worlds; create new realities. All in their own way. Passionate people. People on a mission. They wander from place to place, from discipline to discipline and camp out there. With everything they touch, they make people happy. Happykampers.

These people need a special place, not a generic profile website. And, the imagery should also tell more about these people. So, I invite them to take a picture of their index finger with a happy face drawn on it, to represent them. This means these images will tell a lot about who they are. The color of the ink, the looks of the face, the background in the image or any other added creativity.

Guest lecturing at CEDIM, Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseno de Monterrey, Mexico

I’m truly happy to say that I’ve been invited as a visiting teacher at CEDIM, a place that felt like a candy store when I was there last year, full with unlimited potential to create anything. I will be there from 9 to 20 April. Looking forward to it!

John Moravec visits Stad&Esch

Working for Stad & Esch, making it the best school for the Netherlands, and maybe even the world, continues to be the best possible fun. On April 29, 2010, we had our first meeting gathering a group of people to help Stad & Esch with this goal. That meeting gave birth to Project Dreamschool. We had three foreign guests that day: sir Ken Robinson, Jeff Jarvis and John Moravec. Needless to say that it was a quite remarkable gathering that day via Skype. Since then, we already had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Jarvis in person at PICNIC. And John too, on a event we created at Schiphol. Those meetings were really nice, but only open for a few people. People with ideas about changing education. But not for the people actually doing it as their job. Now, two years later, we had the possibility to have John at the school. In person. Not on video, not on Skype. Just there, to help along and feedback on what has been done so far. Yes, anything is possible if you really want things to happen. Then the world is really a village. One that wants the best school for that village.

Als je niet weet dat een bepaald beroep bestaat, hoe weet je dan hoe je ’t kunt worden? Of wat je nodig hebt om het worden?

Daarom interviewen we mensen met allerlei verschillende banen. Misschien helpen hun verhalen jou om te kiezen en om te praten over je keuze. En dan kunnen we verder: samen kijken hoe je op Stad & Esch de juiste dingen mee krijgt om je plan te volgen.

De eerste in de hopelijk zeer uitgebreide serie is Marco de Jong is directeur van theFactor.e, een full service internetbureau. Opgericht in 1995 is theFactor.e uitgegroeid tot een succesvol full service internetbureau met ruim 80 medewerkers en vestigingen in Groningen, Leeuwarden en Hilversum.

Making the Stad&Esch open day campaign

Because it is not yet finished, a sneak preview of a work in progress. Currently in the making, the new open day campaign for the school. A simple idea, namely that a school is a lot of people that together make the school, we’re making the poster. We cut out all letters in different sizes — had a lot of fun with all the students and staff holding them — and will space them into text again for the posters in an invite to come and visit Stad & Esch. And a bunch of the friendly faces in the posters will be there of course, to show you around. More later!

A great first PICNIC Creative Business Club meeting at Corio

The PICNIC Creative Business Club is a network of companies and organizations which comes together throughout the year. Its objectives are to create the future and explore game-changing solutions to economic, social and environmental challenges.

Members participate in PICNIC events and connect with a diverse group of Dutch and international professionals, entrepreneurs and young talent active in business, the creative industries, government, non-profits and higher education.

Today, the members of the PICNIC Creative Business Club came together at Corio in Utrecht. After a brief introduction by PICNIC board member Gerben Mak and Corio CEO Gerard Groener — who confessed that his half day of PICNIC gave him more inspiration than a year of real estate events — Corio shared their strategy to socialize retail spaces and invited the members of the PCBC to give their input, being a very diverse group — so perfect to learn from. Part of the discussion took place during a walkabout in the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre, one of Corio’s properties which also houses the company’s inspiring headquarters, and was continued later inside while enjoying a fabulous meal.

Central in the conversation was the question on how to create favorite meeting places. From time immemorial, human beings have felt the intrinsic need to meet and spend time with each other. That is still true today. But since our world is the object of constant change, our needs are impacted as well. With the introduction of the internet, an alternative for physical meeting was born. The online landscape offers exciting and new possibilities to connect to other people, thus making a physical meeting place an option rather than a necessity. Therefore, today’s meeting places have to offer more than just decor to appeal to us. So what needs should a social gathering place satisfy? How do these needs differ for a church, a museum, a shopping mall, a park or an event like PICNIC? How do we create favourite meeting places?

Most of the conversation was linked to Hoog Catharijne, which made sense since that was where we were. It would have been more interesting if the discussion had been a bit broader about meeting places at large, but nevertheless it was refreshing and inspiring.

Corio, a PICNIC Creative Business Club member, is also one of Europe’s largest retail property companies. Despite operating in a traditional industry, Corio has taken note of the changing world in which it operates. The company’s innovation strategy has shifted from building typical shopping centres to creating favourite meeting places: sustainable centres where people meet up, spend their time off, and shop; places they want to keep coming back to.
