by Aernoud Bourdrez
Fijn zeg.

Yesterday I received a copy of this great book Het Festivalgevoel, designed by Maslow. A massive book about the festivals in the Netherlands and Belgium. Browsing through the book feels like actually being at those festivals. Great job and thanks!

by Marty Neumeier
Just in, this neat little book by Marty Neumeier. Loved his previous work, so ordered it instantly when it came out. The complex business problems we face today can’t be solved with the same thinking that created them. Instead, we need to start from a place outside traditional management. Design thinking—not spreadsheet thinking—is the management tool that will transform your company into a powerhouse of nonstop innovation. “If you wanna innovate, you gotta design.”

Got this beautiful annual publication by Foam from Hans Bootsma of ModoVanGelder. Designed by Vandejong. Nice!

Captured and released by Joi Ito
Got this fantastic book by Guido van Nispen. Freesouls is an entry into a lively mind, the chance to travel and talk with people who banter about the future from far corners of the earth. The author, Joi Ito shares his access to these provocative change-agents with a spirit of open information and dialog. The folks portrayed have worked to make good from their passions.
The book is available as a boxed set, a limited and numbered edition and a general release. Thanks Guido!

by Clare McNally
Got this neat book by Rudolf at BIS Publishers, to check out if it could be of value for my students. Well, it is! This book shows those embarking on a career in creative advertising how best to put together an effective, professional portfolio. Clare McNally is an acclaimed teacher in advertising (Miami Ad School) and has worked in top agencies and won numerous international advertising awards. She has written her book in a clear voice, with a personal approach. Reading it is very much like enjoying a personal master class by Clare.

by Devon Reid & Shayna Schapp
Devon published a nice small book in co-creation with American photographer and designer Shayna Schapp on love and innovation called The Edge of Things. Thanks, nice!

by the Design & Emotion Society
Today I got this great book in the mail, thanks Jeroen! The book is based on a collaborative workshop organized by the Design & Emotion Society, TU Delft and PolyU on Design & Emotion. One of my students took part in this workshop. Enriching shows the making of five emotion-driven design concepts during the workshops: photos, sketches and handwritten text in the original ‘Dunglish’ and ‘Chinglish’ of the participants make this book a fun read.

Malcolm Gladwell
I’m a fan of his earlier work and of the talks I’ve seen of him. Malcolm Gladwell is a great storyteller, his books are simply a delight to read. So what’s this book about? “Outlier” is a scientific term to describe things or phenomena that lie outside normal experience. In the summer, in Paris, we expect most days to be somewhere between warm and very hot. But imagine if you had a day in the middle of August where the temperature fell below freezing. That day would be outlier. And while we have a very good understanding of why summer days in Paris are warm or hot, we know a good deal less about why a summer day in Paris might be freezing cold. In this book I’m interested in people who are outliers—in men and women who, for one reason or another, are so accomplished and so extraordinary and so outside of ordinary experience that they are as puzzling to the rest of us as a cold day in August.

by Keri Smith
This is simply a very nice read. Beautifully illustrated and a strong subject. Artists and scientists analyze the world around them in surprisingly similar ways, by observing, collecting, documenting, analyzing, and comparing. In this captivating guided journal, readers are encouraged to explore their world as both artists and scientists. “To document and observe the world around you. As if you’ve never seen it before. Take notes. Collect things you find on your travels. Document findings. Notice patterns. Copy. Trace. Focus on one thing at a time. Record what you are drawn to.”

by Vitra
I was visiting the friendly blokes at MyModern for some new chairs and bumped into this just perfect book, again designed by Cornel Windlin, who also is responsible for Vitra’s smart and elegant brochures.
Projekt Vitra is the self-representation of a successful company. And yet the book, with its intelligent essays, with its products arranged like families for a wedding photo, with historical and contemporary pictures and documents, is more than a corporate history. At times it gives a short history of design, at others an example of which architecture is able to achieve, at still others everything revolves around the transformation of the world of work, or the special features of industrial design processes. Or we witness how regional roots and skilled entrepreneurial actions can generate an independent industrial culture and how very personal relationships can lead to global networks.
I instantly ordered it when I was home. Wow.

Like the major exhibition it accompanies, Design and the Elastic Mind focuses on the ability of designers to grasp momentous advances in technology, science and human behavior and convert those changes into objects and systems that people can understand and use. Included projects range from nanodevices to vehicles, appliances to interfaces and building facades, pragmatic solutions for everyday use to provocative ideas meant to influence our future choices. Essays by design experts and a nanophysicist explore the dynamic relationship between design and science. It includes 250 color illustrations, which makes it a nice portable version of the exhibition.

by Concrete
Just got mail! I worked on this book at …,staat and it was far from completed when I left. Great to see how it turned into a massive 480 pages book with a wide variety of creative contributions. In addition to a detailed overview of the firm’s most important projects, The World According to Concrete provides insight into the vision, the working method, the commitment and the sources of inspiration upon which the various projects are based. The thinking behind Concrete’s work is discussed and put in perspective by authors from diverse disciplines.

by Bill Moggridge
In the book Bill Moggridge introduces us to 40 influential designers who have shaped our interaction with technology. The introduction and final chapter combine to describe the approach to designing interactions that has evolved at IDEO. The 800 page book is illustrated with 700 color images. With the book is a DVD of 37 interviews, intercut with examples of interactions and a great supporting website with even more. And the good thing is, when you are open for it, you can also apply the thinking on other fields outside the field of interaction design.

Got this great little book by my friend Arjan, who works as a senior architect at UNStudio, and has been involved in the realization of this great museum. In this book, the working methodology of UNStudio is demonstrated by help of the spatially and technically extremely demanding project Mercedes-Benz Museum for DaimlerChrysler in Stuttgart. It documents the service capability of architects and architecture.
