Wow. Today is a special day. We have six students graduating from a new department at the Royal Academy of Art that started a bit more than for years ago. A small international group strong and diverse individuals took the risk with us to dive into the adventure to co-create a brand new course with a highly energetic and passionate team: Interactive/Media/Design. Because the need for media exceeding designers is constantly growing, Interactive/Media/Design provides a powerful fulfilment of the demands for the education of independent, social, conceptual creative and pan medial-designers.

What a ride it was and it hasn’t always been easy, especially for this first group. Although being and becoming a pioneer is part of I/M/D, these six students really helped shape the course next to following the ever changing program. Without their flexibility, ability and willingness to constantly be critical while being the first at e-ve-ry-thing, I/M/D would not have overcome the start-up phase and had the opportunity to grow into a real department within KABK. For that, on behalf of all I/M/D staff and the KABK I say thank you.

My sincere congratulations with your bachelor in Design. I know, that you also became part of a close-knit network with your colleagues, teachers and staff that will remain to exist beyond the walls of this building. It’s not the end of something, it’s the beginning of something new. All the best in your professional life and I hope that you want to stay involved in shaping I/M/D.

Johnny: India Experience actie!

Jonne Seijdel is derdejaars student Interactive/Media/Design en is momenteel op stage in India waar hij meehelpt bij een weeshuis. Op zijn weblog doet hij verslag van zijn avonturen. Erg leuk geschreven persoonlijke verhalen en Jonne is ook nog eens geweldig fotograaf, meerdere redenen om eens te gaan kijken. Vanmorgen kwam van hem het verzoek voor wat aandacht voor zijn nieuwe project, en natuurlijk doe ik dat! Help Jonne mee, bied of doneer!

Jonne: Om Kumari en het weeshuis (WIDE Children’s Home) te steunen vraag ik aan iedereen om eens te checken of je een paar extra centen over hebt die ze hier heel erg goed kunnen gebruiken. Voor deze monster actie heb ik mijn eigen naam, hand, tijd & non-stop actieve brein in de strijd gegooid om als een wervelstorm binnen te klappen in de vorm van een t-shirt. Een t-shirt? Njahhhh… een soort van. Het is natuurlijk kunst op textiel. Dat je het toevallig kan dragen is een leuke extra additie. Het is in ieder geval uniek en dat is belangrijk toch? Jaaa man, een echte Seijdel! Wie wil dat niet? Maar even zere neus… Het t-shirt is het resultaat van mijn India ervaringen tot nu toe, een paar geinige highlights. Een aap, koe, banaan, hagedis, tempel & veel muggen. Inmiddels al wel redelijk bekend natuurlijk. In eerste instantie was het de bedoeling het door 1 van de kinderen te laten inkleuren maar dat heeft Kumari op het laatst tegengehouden, ze vond het zonde om dit mooie shirt te laten verpesten haha! Eventuele volgende shirts krijgen op de borst een zelf getekend ontwerp van de kinderen (die ik zal overtrekken). Maar anyway. Dit mooie, groene shirt op onderstaande foto’s is het gezicht van mijn sponsoractie; Johnny: India Experience. En deze mascotte kan jij in huis halen! Door te bieden! Het startbedrag is 75 eur en daar blijft het hopelijk niet op steken. Dat kan gewoon niet. De reden van dit shirt is natuurlijk om zoveel mogelijk geld binnen te halen dus donaties los van dit shirt zijn ook meer dan welkom of daar gaat het eigenlijk zelfs nog het meest om.

Voor een iets duidelijker beeld waar het geld hard voor gebruikt kan worden hier een overzicht van een aantal vaste lasten;

• Schoolboeken voor 1 kind per jaar Rs 180 (Eur 2,92)
• Kleren inclusief schoenen voor 1 kind per jaar Rs 770 (Eur 12,51)
• Zeep, olie, shampoo, tandpasta voor alle kinderen p/m Rs 3030 (Eur 49,25)

Presenting ideas for own projects

It will be an exiting semester. This semester the first and second year students have Concept Development together, what will hopefully help in cross-pollinating each others ideas and work. We divided this semester into three tracks. An event, a project with a commercial organization and an own project. Today all students presented their first ideas for their own projects. Looking forward to the results and developments, since those projects range from social media into reality things, to movies, animations,vj installations, workflow management tools for architects, sculptures to even cook books. Sweet!

Presenting creative concepts to Blof

The students presented their creative concepts to Bløf. Last semester they developed new ideas for the music industry with Bløf as the client. For that, we founded The Embassy of Sound, where music comes from cows. The Embassy has five different departments ranging from hardware development to the Ministry of Musicultural Affairs.

In november Bas Kennis of Bløf already visited the Concept Development (CD) class to tell more about how they use new technologies to promote their music. It was really great that the entire band took a lot of time for the presentations and give valuable feedback on the ideas, ranging from smart social media solutions to even song-inspired fashion. After the presentation we enjoyed a great meal and their concert.

Today, Bas Kennis of Bløf joined the Concept Development (CD) class to tell more about how they use new technologies to promote their music. At CD we’re developing new ideas for the music industry with Bløf as our client. For that, we founded The Embassy of Sound, where music comes from cows. In January, the students will present their final concepts to the majority of the band.

Concept Development class with special guest Itay Talgam

Can it get any better? To already on your second class Concept Development have a special guest: Itay Talgam. He was one of last years speakers at Mastermundo. Itay had a stop-over in Amsterdam from a conference in Germany where he had a talk, on his way back to Tel Aviv. We had a great brainstorm in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam on a beautiful sunny day and created some beautiful and unique concepts that we’re going to try out 26 September. Will be great!

Introducing: a fresh new breed of I/M/D students

Another year and another fresh group of strong individuals that start at Interactive/Media/Design. This is the very first year that we have a group of students to graduate this year. Quite exiting and I think they will do great. So, this year we’re as international as we can be. Interactive/Media/Design at the Royal Academy of Art is growing up. We have a great new space, a great team, worked on some great projects and have a wide variety of talents what we wanted to share. Students presented work made for the Babynet project: all about creating a bond between premature babies and their parents using technology. And students presented work made for the educational software project for Ambrasoft: all about creating better educational tools for 6-12 year old children. And we had some drinks and enjoyed the finest music.

Concept Development | Shape session #4

The 1rst and 2nd year students are working on two projects, see below. After a month of finding clarifying what it is, a month of exploring opportunities, this month they’re shaping their concepts with the help of a broad variety of guests. The fourth session Bianca Geerts, Jacco van Uden, Lex Hupe, Irma van Straaten en Astrid Lubsen joined to further deepen and broaden the concepts the students worked on.

Subjects:
1. Concept development for the Neonatology division of Isala Klinieken in Zwolle, that pioneers with technology in their Intensive Care. We are working on the question: how can we facilitate bonding between parents and their little premature child or little brothers and sisters? Using technology, making it simple instead of complex for normal people? In other words: how can we use technology to create a strong connection between people?

2. Concept development for a publisher named Ambrasoft, which is currently in the market-leading position of educational software for children in the grammar school age. They asked us to join in on the thinking process because they are aware that the current software will be out of date in the near future, both technically and design/interface/feel-wise. This process will have to be finished in 2012.
