I was watching some TED Talks in the train, again looking for some fresh insights and, because I’m way behind (56 talks…) in watching them so I random picked one in iTunes: TEDTalks : Bertrand Piccard’s solar-powered adventure – Bertrand Piccard (2009). What an incredible story. A balloon as a metaphor for life. Made me also think about Itay Talgam’s story, using a conductor and orchestra as a analogy for leadership. Two beautiful inspirational stories that can be helpful for changing directions!

Lieve mensen,

gemeenschappelijke kern. En daar ging het om.

Anne-Kee Deelen, verhalenfee

I will try to fix you, sung by: Fred Knittle in Young@heart
I got this link by Jaap (thanks!), linking to a be-au-ti-ful performance by Young@Heart. Fred Knittle sings Fix you by Coldplay as a tribute to two members who passed away. Simply beautiful and such a great voice. Embedding is disabled by request, so click this text to watch and listen.

When Bob Cilman and Judith Sharpe organized the Young@Heart (Y@H) in 1982 all of the members lived in an elderly housing project in Northampton, MA called the Walter Salvo House. The first group included elders who lived through both World Wars. One of our members had fought in the Battle of the Somme as a 16 year old and another, Anna Main, lost her husband in the First World War. Anna was a stand-up comic who at 88 told jokes that only she could get away with. She sang with us until she was 100. We celebrated her 100th birthday with a parade downtown. We actually had to reschedule the parade for a year later when her family informed us that we had the date wrong and she was only 99. This initial group also included Diamond Lillian Aubrey who came on our first two European tours and wowed the audiences with her deadpan version of Manfred Mann’s “Doo Wah Diddy”. In later years she appeared “on stage” via video, performing the Stone’s “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”.

The current performers in Young@Heart range in age from 73 to 89. There are some with prior professional theater or music experience, others who have performed extensively on the amateur level, and some who never stepped onto a stage before turning eighty. None of the current performers of Y@H were part of the original group that formed in 1982, but they have kept alive the spirit of the early pioneers and continue to push the group into glorious new directions.

This is a great story on how nothing is what it seems. Maarten won a gold medal on at the last Olympic Games in China, after overcoming cancer. In this great show by Wilfried de Jong, one of the best interviewers on Dutch tv, Maarten locks himself with Wilfried for 24 hours. In this clip, Maarten shares his entire strategy for winning that medal. He tried to exclude luck as much as possible, planned everything ahead as much as he could. Truly amazing.

So nice. Autumn music at its best, the new The Swell Season, a collaboration of Glen Hansard of The Frames and Marketa Irglova. I was so touched by their first collaboration, truly nice. Listen for yourself. Also great are the limited edition posters they have for each gig. Most of them compliment the music beautifully.

An amazing story, so strong, full of love and positive.

Patz shares his story, on how he halfway almost everything he did, decided to do something else. On how he still thinks what he would like to become when he grows up (he’s 44). He had a career in advertising, but again decided to something else and started CircusPatz because he wanter to do the things that he wanted to make. He now makes books and toys for children, always with a story as a starting point and dreams of making movies to tell his stories. At the end of the conversation, at 36:26, he shares a great story about the ruins of the palace from the King of Utrecht, really nice, rally nice and so true.

I travel by trains a lot, since I do most of my work not really near where I live. And I use that time for a lot of things. Trains are great. They enable you to go wherever you want to go, and while you are doing that, do something else at the same time. I do like driving though, but not only to get me from A to B. Because sitting in a car with my favorite music on, always makes my head spin and writing down ideas while driving is a bad idea. And recording them on a memo recorder simply doesn’t work for me. Writing ideas down, print the ideas in my brain. The saying ‘I don’t write things down to remember it later, but remember it now’ is so true for me. So, for me trains give me time while cars take time.

Besides all the things that I need to do for projects I work on, like reading briefings, backgrounds, preparing meetings, writing proposals, concepts, etc. I use my train time for inspiration. A project provides me an extra lens to look at the world, in any form. From magazines, tv, things on the street, what people say, the news, imagery, anything.

In the train, I watch a lot of vodcasts from and about a lot of things. Vodcasts are great, because they provide snack size inspiration that, one way or the other, always become meaningful for the projects I am working on at that moment. I also see a lot of things that I can’t use or don’t touch me. But also a lot that does. That can be anything. Great new technologies, beautiful things, but mostly great stories. So, since I always see a lot of them, I can share with you a selection of what I think are interesting things to watch on the go. Or any other kind of portable inspiration.

So check back regularly for a fine selection of carefully selected goods for inspiration, or subscribe to this channel’s RSS feed. Enjoy!

As a starter, the great 7 year itch theory of Stefan Sagmeister:
